A significant contingent of women supported alcohol prohibition during the 1800s, as they reportedly began feeling frustrated by husbands who would spend their money at pubs and brothels. This is said to have been provoked in part by the growth of saloon culture, which sometimes resulted in women having to deal with their spouses’ violence, STIs and debts.
