Video: ISIS Burns Down Marijuana Fields in Syria
The militant group is destroying marijuana crops in a Syrian town they've captured, because they believe drugs are "evil."
The Islamic State militant group (ISIS) claims it is burning down marijuana fields in Syria and has released a video to prove it. In the clip (below), the group’s militants are apparently denouncing the “evils” of drugs before chopping down some marijuana bushes and setting them on fire. The footage seems to be from Akhtarin, a town in north Syria that ISIS captured in recent weeks.
Earlier his summer a Syrian newspaper reported that some farmers have started growing pot in a desperate effort to generate income amidst the country’s devastating civil war. But the farmers are threatened by radical Islamist fighters, like the Islamic State group (ISIS), who believe drugs are in violation of Islamic law. ISIS—one of the main jihadist groups fighting government forces in Syria and Iraq—has been known to ban cigarettes, alcohol and drugs in areas under its control.
