TODAY! (July 16) Join Our Opioids Twitter Chat With Phoenix House
Get involved in the debate about Rx pills and heroin on Wednesday, July 16 at 3 pm EST, using #pillchat on Twitter.
Addiction and overdose due to opioids—whether Rx drugs like oxycodone, or heroin—among all races, genders and income brackets, is at the forefront of news coverage in the United States. In the last decade alone, more than 125,000 deaths have been attributed to these drugs.
The CDC has called this “the worst drug crisis in US history.” What are the root causes of this “epidemic,” if indeed that term is accurate? What roles do health practitioners play? And how can policy, harm reduction approaches and treatment help?
These are just a few of the questions we’ll be asking when Substance.com teams up with Phoenix House, the national nonprofit addiction treatment organization, for a Twitter chat on July 16 at 3 pm EST. Everyone is invited to participate—and you’ll be joining a host of experts and addiction-related organizations.
Our featured guests will include addiction theorist and author of Recover! Stanton Peele; journalist and New York Times best-selling Beautiful Boy and Clean author David Sheff; retired police lieutenant commander and LEAP board member Diane Goldstein; policy director for VOCAL New York Matt Curtis—with insights from addiction psychologist and researcher Dr. Adi Jaffe. Also joining the chat are Denise Mariano, a parent with a son in recovery and coach for Partnership for Drug-Free Kids; journalist and editor of the Addiction Inbox blog Dirk Hanson; journalist and author of The Recovering Body Jennifer Matesa; representatives from Drug Policy Alliance and Harm Reduction Coalition; and Substance.com regulars Jeff deeney and Tony O’Neill. We hope to see you there!
