Shot of the Day: New Year’s Eve 1978 at Studio 54
Living up to its reputation?
This shot was taken on New Year’s Eve 1978 at Studio 54, a club described by its co-founder Ian Schrager as “the epicenter of the drug culture in New York.” But this iconic disco was as much a meet-and-greet for the hip and famous as it was a narcotic watering hole. Patrons included everyone from Michael Jackson to Mick Jagger to Diana Ross to Andy Warhol—and the guests pictured probably weren’t the only ones to end their night on the floor. Studio 54 closed after being raided for tax evasion just over a year after this photo was taken.
