Shot of the Day: Prisoner Wall Art Inside Western State Penitentiary

A photographer found hundreds of eerie relics of the cells' former occupants.

Photographer Mark Perrott took a tour of Western State Penitentiary in Pittsburgh back in 2005, which at first he saw as just “another history project” to document a facility that was being shut down. Prisoners there were held in a 43-cell section of E Block while staff determined permanent placement—and Perrott was surprised to find hundreds of original drawings decorating the cell walls that had never been removed or painted over.
