Amsterdam is widely known as the weed capital of the world, with people visiting from all over to purchase and smoke weed at the city’s multitude of “coffee shops.” But increasingly strict regulations are threatening to phase out this marijuana-friendly reputation.

In this video, Vice explores the city’s cannabis crackdown, visiting some of the establishments impacted by toughening drug laws. Many are now forced to require “weed passes” to prevent marijuana tourism, and some are being shut down for failing to comply with regulations.

At the same time, growers who supply the businesses with their signature product are facing more raids and arrests. Doede de Jong, a bonafide celebrity of Dutch marijuana culture, is one of the few growers willing to speak openly about the situation: “There is a lot of oppression [in the Netherlands] and it’s going worse, I think,” he says. “It’s priority number one to catch farmers with weed.”
