“Straight Outta Tompkins” is an upcoming crime and drug-filled drama written, produced and directed by former heroin user Zephyr Benson. Set against the backdrop of NYC’s gritty Lower East Side, the movie is based on the 21-year-old debut filmmaker’s own experiences with drug use and his friends’ struggles with addiction. “Since I was 17 years old, heroin has been an unfortunate part of my life,” he says. ”I’ve watched friends of mine battle addiction. Some ended up going down similar paths with similar tragic outcomes.”

The film, premiering in March, stars Benson as a middle class teenager battling heroin addiction, and documents his friendship with his drug dealer. “I’ve lost people I love to this drug,” he says. “If you haven’t experienced it, it’s hard to imagine. But it’s a story I felt compelled to share.”
